What do we share in a world of constant change? What are our values as artists, activists, in communities, as citizens of Europe and the world? How can we change the way dance films are produced by working with local communities? And how can we change ourselves and society?

In recent years, our world has altered significantly. The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Europe, shape our understanding of the present. Our democratic coexistence is increasingly under pressure. At the same time, it is a question of negotiating the values needed to forge an open, peaceful society and find resilience in a world in crisis.

As mAPs producers, we wanted to do something different for the genre of dance film: to invent new stories, new ways of storytelling, different working processes. To boost the visibility of dance films. To create structural change and test a collective approach to production not only conditioned by the needs of the market. To respond to this world by creating change - locally and globally - as citizens of the world, as creatives and filmmakers in Europe. Our hope was to open up to new stimuli by producing dance films with both professionals and people from our local communities; to enter into an artistic dialogue; to cooperate and exchange ideas. To find a collective way of working in dance and film together, internationally, and use dance film production as a tool for social transformation. To make a difference, and establish a different kind of artistic practice: in our cities, studios and rural areas; in five different countries from the North to the South of Europe. From France, Italy and Greece to Germany and Finland. From Saint-Étienne, Turin and Athens to Wuppertal and Malax.

We haven’t always succeeded. We haven’t always managed to acknowledge everything that has shaken our continent and the rest of the world in this period. But we have certainly tried to tackle our collective fears and trauma in our stories and films: everyday racism, the upcoming climate catastrophes, the supremacy of data, social transformation processes and the power dynamics of late-stage capitalism.

Together we have developed a method for the production of dance films that can provide a wealth of support to young artists and scholars and fundamentally advance the discussion in the fields of dance, film and cultural activism. This publication is a first reflection of our journey.
